In 2006, California Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger signed California Assembly Bill 32 into law, which made the Golden State the first to limit greenhouse gases and was a huge step toward the 2025 54.5-mpg fuel economy standard embraced by the U.S. auto industry.
Not too long after, he was picking up the keys to a five-ton harbinger of death called the Unimog U1300, which has a 6.4-liter diesel engine that is sure to keep environmentalists up at night. Arnie’s big book of one-liners is already bursting at the seams, but “Do as I say, not as I do” needs to be in there somewhere.
Now, according to Mercedes-Benz Passion, the behemoth Unimog has been put up for sale, giving any would-be action stars the chance to send Prius drivers scurrying.
Listed at 208,250 EUR ($273,250), the Unimog was customized specifically for Schwarzenegger and is road-legal both in the U.S. and Germany. The 320-horsepower engine churns the U1300’s massive 22-inch wheels up to a top speed of around 60 mph and features a plethora of special equipment commissioned by The Expendables star.
The Unimog rides on air suspension, features a remote control-operated electric wench, reverse camera, trailer brake system, rollbar, and appropriately named ‘Hella’ lights.
The first Unimogs were born in the 1940s in Germany as agricultural equipment, but they soon began serving in militaries all over the world. The armed services of the United States, Britain, France, New Zealand, Australia and countless others have drafted the German off-roaders into service over the years, and they’ve even been used as ambulances and disaster relief support vehicles.
They’ve also gained prominence in the Dakar Rally, an off-road endurance race, as well as other slow moving obstacle competitions.
